Ramadan: Whirling Dervishes come to Shepparton

Hijack’d, a Shepparton based food truck and social change movement, is excited to be working with Multicultural Arts Victoria to present a special free Backyard Iftar at Queen’s Gardens as part of Hijack’d’s Ramadan Sessions.

This unique event will provide an opportunity for local people from all cultural backgrounds to have a taste of Ramadan, and for Shepparton’s Islamic Community to feel a sense of belonging and continue their beautiful traditions of breaking fast together.

The event will include a free dinner and a very special performance by the Whirling Dervishes who perform a spiritual dance called the sema to express emotion and achieve the wisdom and love of God. The sema originated in Turkey, in the Islamic sect of Sufism, which was founded by Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi.

The night will also feature Shepparton based musician Zakir Hussein performing on the Rubab, “the lion of instruments” and one of the two national instruments of Afghanistan.

Supported by Multicultural Arts Victoria, Gandel Philanthropy, Australia Council for the Arts, Ethnic Council Shepparton.
