The first stage of the Bendigo Islamic Community Centre is taking shape, with the walls of the structure now up. The first sod was turned at the Bendigo East site a little under a year ago, and last month the first concrete slab was poured. This week, the walls of the first building were erected.

After six years of controversy that saw protests in the streets and a mock beheading, a mosque is finally being built in the central Victorian city of Bendigo. Accompanied by police, Premier Daniel Andrews took part in a sod-turning ceremony at the site of the future Bendigo Islamic Community Centre in East Bendigo this morning.

Muslims have been proud to make Bendigo their home since the Goldrush, contributing to the community and the economy of Victoria’s third-largest city for more than 120 years. With the combination of community support, the celebration of diversity and openness, and the city’s rich history and culture, the Bendigo Islamic Community Centre will be constructed near Bendigo Airport. A fundraiser will take place on Saturday 22 September 2018, at the Shepparton Showgrounds.
