A series of free Cultural Leadership Workshops are presented each year for artists to build new diverse leadership, specific artform skills and cultural development. These include focused development workshops providing tailored advice for musicians as part of Multicultural Arts Victoria’s (MAV’s) State of Culture Music Program. MAV also works annually with the City of Melbourne to present free information sessions and grant writing workshops. The workshops are a platform to share ideas and develop skills in community leadership and cultural management, providing the opportunity for participants to network, build leadership and management skills, get to know their local governments and cultural sectors, and discuss common issues with peers and experts.
During 2016 Multicultural Arts Victoria is working with emerging artists and communities, local governments and cultural organisations in outer metro and regional Victorian local government areas (LGAs), Bendigo, Brimbank, Wyndham, Shepparton and Swan Hill to collaboratively develop and deliver a cultural leadership program that responds to local needs and builds on local strengths. Emerge Cultural Leadership will foster new cultural leaders from emerging communities and help strengthen engagement and dialogue between cultures. It will also make more visible and celebrate the achievements of local emerging refugee, culturally diverse and Indigenous communities. The core activities will include artistic mentoring, seeding new cultural projects and enterprises, cultural management and creative industries workshops, and an Ambassadors program. A number of Emerge Cultural Networks Gatherings this year, where you can:
- meet like-minded artists and cultural leaders from Indigenous and newly arrived and emerging communities
- learn more about MAV’s Emerge Cultural Leadership program and opportunities
- hear about some upcoming projects and successes
- discuss ideas and opportunities for building participation in the arts
