The Contemplative Studies Centre of the University of Melbourne will conduct several sessions on Guided Insight Meditation: The wisdom of the body commencing Tuesday 3 September at 1:00pm, running weekly until 24 September. Participation is free.

Cultivating serenity and wisdom through mindfulness of the body

Insight meditation is a modern form of Buddhism founded on ethics, meditation and wisdom, whose goal is freedom of the heart-mind. It is a meditation method which uses satipatthana or mindfulness to inquire into the nature of body, feelings, mind, and the wisdom aspects of life that limit us and those that bring long-term happiness and freedom. Over four weeks, participants will explore mindfulness practices based on breathing, bodily sensations, the four elements, and open awareness for deeper insights into body, heart and mind.

Overview

Insight meditation is a modern form of Buddhism founded on ethics, meditation and wisdom, whose goal is freedom of the heart-mind. It is also a meditation method, which uses satipatthana – the ways of establishing mindfulness – to inquire into the nature of body, feelings, mind, and the wisdom aspects of life that limit us and those that bring long-term happiness and freedom.

What attendees can expect

Over these four weeks, we’ll practise methods of settling awareness, moment-to-moment, in the physical body, as taught by the Buddha through satipatthana (mindfulness) practice. The physical body is always in the present. So when we settle awareness in the body over time, we are grounding ourselves in the present moment more fully, which allows for: greater intimacy with life as it unfolds, wiser responsiveness in our daily lives, and the potential for insight into the nature of the body, heart and mind. We’ll utilise practices based on breathing, tracking bodily sensations, the four elements of earth, water, fire and air that make up our physical body, and the senses, to explore the important role of the body in mindfulness meditation.
