GV Hospice is organising their second Community Candlelight Memorial Event in May to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones lost over the past 12 months. All members of the Community are invited to light a candle and write a message for those they wish to remember. The event will take place at the lake foreshore, at the amphitheatre behind the SAM building. The candlelight event will take place from 5.30pm until 6.30pm on Wednesday 22nd May 2024.

In line with Council requirements battery operated candles will be supplied, as will materials to write a message of remembrance. There will be live music at the event, featuring a well-known local musician, Nigel Parsons. Alexander McKinnon from Goulburn Valley Brass and Drums will also be there playing the bagpipes. Lion’s Club Mooroopna will provide a free barbecue again this year, and a coffee van be available for those wanting to purchase hot drinks. Complimentary bottles of water will also be available on the night.

“We hope to have many people come and spend time with other members of the community to remember and celebrate their loved ones.” Executive Manager of GV Hospice Wendy Ross said.

“This is an event for the whole community, not just those who have been connected with GV Hospice. The memorial will be flexible. Some people may wish to come for a short time, light a candle and leave, others may wish to stay for the hour to listen to live background music, enjoy the barbecue and feel supported by the wider community. “

It is hoped that individuals, families and groups of friends can join together and pay tribute to their loved ones in a beautiful setting. There is some seating in the amphitheatre, but community members are invited to bring blankets if they wish.
Well known community member Ian Bull OAM, has generously offered to be the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

“The opportunity for a family to formally and respectfully say their goodbyes, to give thanks and to celebrate a life lived, with the support of family and friends, is a very important part of the grieving and healing processes. This memorial event will hopefully provide a sense of comfort and re-assurance to those who are still hurting, in the knowledge that our community stands with them”. (Ian Bull OAM – Master of Ceremonies)

If the weather is inclement the event held upstairs at GV Hospice, 102 Balaclava Road, and Shepparton 3630. Any changes will be advertised closer to the event: www.gvhospice.org.au, Facebook @GVHospice.
