In observance of Cultural Diversity Week 2019, Shepparton Uniting Church in collaboration with Shepparton Interfaith Network will conduct a Multifaith Prayer Service at the Shepparton Uniting Church, 134-140 Fryers Street Shepparton, at 12:00 pm on Thursday 21 March 2019. This service will celebrate cultural diversity and community harmony. Shepparton is recognised as an area of successful settlement amongst many immigrant communities, and is host to St Paul’s African House, the Sikh Gurduara and four mosques. Ministers from several faiths will be participating.

Cultural Diversity Week is held annually in March to coincide with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Harmony on March 21. Cultural Diversity Week 2019 will be held from 16 – 24 March.

Today, almost half of Victorians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. We come from 200 countries, speak over 260 languages and follow more than 130 different faiths. Victoria – and Shepparton – are considered one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world.

Multiculturalism is a part of the Victorian identity, character and way of life. This is our multicultural story. It is part of who we are as Shepparton.

Theme: Your Generation, Your Stories

Though we may have different cultural backgrounds, when we share stories with one another, we find our common humanity. Settlement in Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley sees a wide range of responses to living here. Many are grateful for the rights Australia give to women; others are pleased at the opportunity to learn English.

When people settle in Shepparton, they share their culture, their customs and traditions, and their food at our festivals, such as the St Georges Road Festival. These people make our community a vibrant and satisfying place to live. As generations pass, the stories of their ancestors are handed down, in addition to having their own stories of family and settlement in the Goulburn Valley.

These stories are important; when they are shared – and heard – they give validation to the story told, to the speaker, and point to a future filled with meaning and hope. Your generation, Your Stories is a way of making meaning and building a future worth living in.
