Melbourne: The William Cooper Legacy



The Council of Christians and Jews (Victoria) would like to invite you to a presentation on the legacy of William Cooper, an indigenous Australian who protested the treatment of Jews to the German Consulate in Melbourne, 79 years ago. This presentation will take place at the Jewish Holocaust Centre, Elsternwick on the afternoon of Sunday 10 December.


 

About the speakers:

  • Avraham Schwarz will present an audio-visual summary of Uncle Boydie’s delegation to London, Ypres, Beersheba and Berlin this past month honouring the 79th anniversary of his grandfather William Cooper’s 6-12-1938 protest to the German Government on the very day the world commemorates the UN Declaration of Human Rights, 10th December.
  • Michael Pearce SC, Hon. Consul General of Germany, will speak on behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany who has provided him with a report on the William Cooper event.
  • Tim Watts MP, Labor Federal Member for Gellibrand, will talk on his quest to rename his constituency “Cooper”. He will be making a statement to be recorded in Hansard, a request for the change of name on December 6th which is when William Cooper marched on the German Consulate, 79 years ago.
