Shepparton Interfaith Network urges all Australians to celebrate the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples during National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the historical and significant contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures continue to make in building a stronger and socially cohesive multicultural community in Australia.

The national theme this year is Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond.

Shepparton Interfaith Network has a strong history of interaction with local and state indigenous communities. The faith communities join in honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have served in Australia's long history of military conflicts and engagements and honour their priceless contribution to shaping our nation.”

NAIDOC Week gives Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples cultures and history and to strengthen the growing relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and CALD Australians.

The 2014 National NAIDOC Poster

The theme for 2014 is Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond. Designed by Harry Alfred Pitt, a Torres Strait Islander man, the winning artist whose artwork is featured on this year’s poster.

Mr Pitt’s concept for the poster depicts three brothers with their land behind them and the horizon before them. Their Elders are reflected in the water, giving the brothers the strength to overcome the challenges that may lie over the horizon.
