Shepparton: NAIDOC WEEK ACTIVITIES

songlinesNAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.[2] The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces. In 2016, Naidoc Week will run from Sunday, 3 July until Sunday, 10 July 2016. Shepparton will celebrate NAIDOC Week 2016 with many local events.

Local community celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Click here for links to Victorian celebrations throughout the week.

To mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week, the Flag Raising Ceremony will give the opportunity for members of the community to publicly commemorate the importance of NAIDOC week. The Melbourne ceremony will be on Monday 4th July at Federation Square 9:30am – 11:00am. Click on the link above to see the list of a number of locations and times around Melbourne and Victoria.

The 2016 NAIDOC March will be held on Friday 8th July. This year we are starting at 10:30am with a pre-march festival and the march set to start at 11:45am at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) on Nicholson Street Fitzroy. We expect to finish at Federation Square between 1:30pm and 2:00pm. We welcome all people, councils, organisations and businesses to come and march with us. Come to the VAHS at 10:30am for a feed and refreshments, make banners, get the kids’ faces painted, and get prepared for the march. We will depart from VAHS, walk down Nicholson Street onto Spring Street, turn down Bourke Street and then onto Swanston Street finishing up at Fed Square with a Post March Concert.
