Shepparton Interfaith Network is partnering with Friends of Shepparton Art Museum (Friends of SAM), the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District and Shepparton Art Museum to present an evening on Islamic Architecture and the design of the recently constructed Islamic Museum of Australia, located in Thornbury. Heart to Heart through Art will be presented at St Paul’s African House on Thursday 14 September.
A number of community groups have visited (or plan to visit) the Islamic Museum of Australia in Thornbury. Upon consultation, The Director of the Museum was very supportive of having a local speaker in Shepparton. Architecture was chosen as the art theme to pursue, and the Director recommended Issam Nabulsi, Director of Desypher, a Melbourne-based design office that aims to utilise the medium of architecture as a means of building cohesion within communities. He is the architect responsible for the Islamic Museum of Australia.
Issam Nabulsi is very pleased to come to speak, the chosen venue of Africa House is available so the event is planned for Thursday September 14, 6.30 – 8.30pm. We want to encourage a wide cross section of the Shepparton community to attend so we are keeping the cost low and providing child care. Finger food from different cultures will be served on arrival, catering for various dietary requirements. Entry is $10 each for adults which will cover the costs.
Issam is not charging a fee but has asked we make a donation to his chosen charity – Community Care Network http://www.ccn-melbourne.org/
The aims of this event and hopefully future art-based activities, is to encourage better connection and understanding between the diverse groups that make up the Shepparton community, to share and enjoy the art of different cultures, to grow the use of and participation in Shepparton Art Museum programs.
