Sikh Gurduara, Shepparton

The Shepparton Interfaith Network sends condolences to the Sikh Community of Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley

Mr Gurmeet Singh
Chair
Sikh Gurduara Council
The Sikh Gurduara
240 Doyles Road
Shepparton 3630.

Dear Gurmeet,

Wahe Guru!

I am writing on behalf of Shepparton Interfaith Network to express to the members of your community our dismay and sorrow at the tragic attack on the Sikh community in Wisconsin, U.S.A. Please pass on our condolences to the community and especially to any who have relatives or close friends who belong to that particular community which suffered so cruelly in recent days.

One of the important aspects of community relationships here in Shepparton has been the positive approach to community relationships taken by members of your community. One of the key roles of the Interfaith Network is to strengthen mutual understanding and respect between peoples of different religious and cultural backgrounds, precisely to prevent, as far as possible, antagonism and hatred arising simply because of difference.

In the past, our forefathers failed in our treatment of the indigenous peoples of this area, but serious efforts are being made to try and overcome that shameful period in our history. Hopefully Shepparton has learned from those mistakes of the past and will continue to strengthen and maintain its commitment to respect for the cultural and religious diversity in our community.

With our deepest sorrow and condolences.

Yours sincerely

Dr Frank Purcell,
President,
Shepparton Interfaith Network
