The Sri Lankan Association of the Goulburn Valley invites you to a memorial service to remember the beautiful souls lost in the Easter Sunday tragedy in Sri Lanka. Prayer for Sri Lanka will be conducted at St Brendan’s Church, Shepparton, on evening of Friday, 3 May at 6pm. All are invited to bring flowers to lay at the Shrine of St Brendan.
The church bombings were carried out during Easter services in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo; the hotels that were bombed were the Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Tropical Inn. The Kingsbury hotel management resumed their operations on 24 April 2019; the other two luxury hotels, the Cinnamon Grand and Shangri-La, are closed temporarily until further notice. A minor explosion of a motorbike was also recorded in Savoy Cinema, Colombo during the raids conducted by police officers on 24 April 2019. On 25 April 2019, another minor controlled explosion of a motorbike was reported at a bus stand in Moratuwa during the police raids. On 26 April 2019, three explosions and a shootout occurred during a raid in Sainthamaruthu. At least fifteen people were killed, including six children and a curfew was imposed in the area.
The Easter 2019 Sri Lankan bombings are the worst terrorist event since 9/11, audacious in nature and audacious in revealing the new tactics of ISIL. Sadly, the world must now attend and research these new emanations of ISIL.
The 2016 Local Government regional profile shows 139 people in Greater Shepparton give Sri Lanka as their place of birth; Greater Bendigo records 180 people giving Sri Lanka as their place of Birth. Neighbouring municipality of Hume has 3,105 persons state Sri Lanka as their birthplace.
Majority of the places bombed were Catholic Churches; Sunday Masses have been suspended until the authorities tell it is safe to resume worship. Other places – places of hospitality – have yet to resume services.
