Shepparton: Speed Date a Muslim

A group of Melbourne Muslim women are breaking down intolerance and furthering understanding using an unconventional approach—speed dating. Speed Date A Muslim comes to Shepparton on Sunday, 26 February 2017.

If the popularity of Hana Assafiri’s Speed Date a Muslim event is anything to go by, these thoughts are rattling around the minds of many Australians. “When one is speed dating, we approach it with the openness of heart and mind that is absolutely necessary to getting to know another human being.” ‘The questions can be as benign as “Why do you wear your hijab? Do you sleep in it?” to “How do Islam and feminism [co-]exist? Are Islam and democracy in conflict or do they work together?”‘

During the Sunday afternoon sessions, Hanna Assafiri flits between tables, helping conversation along and throwing in prompts for questions. ‘It’s not a one-sided conversation; these events become avenues of engagement and cohesion,’ she says.

Have you got a question you would like to know about Islam but don’t know anyone to ask or maybe too afraid to ask? This is the second opportunity in Shepparton for this session. It is a safe environment to ask Muslim women about their faith and culture over dinner, and learn something new about someone in your community.
