Negotiating a Most Difficult Relationship: Christianity and Islam

Shepparton Interfaith Network in collaboration with Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District have conducted several observances of United Nations International Day of Tolerance. The same observance was conducted with an interfaith meeting on 17 November 2016 at Senior Citizens Centre, Welsford St, Shepparton. Noted religious commentator Paul Collins is well known to the Australian public via his work as a broadcaster, for a time as presenter of the Religion Report on Radio National as well as being a general commentator on religious affairs for radio and television and print media. Nostra Aetate: Cordial Relations with Other Religions

Last October marked the fiftieth anniversary of Nostra aetate (“In Our Time”), the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions. There were celebrations in Australia on the signal importance of this document. Commonweal (a Catholic Magazine) has devoted a great deal of space over the years to explaining and exploring the significance of Nostra aetate for Catholic-Jewish relations. Some theologians understood this document opened the door for the Church to accept non-Christian religions. Other theologians did not. You may read the Commonweal article here.

Italian Christians establish safe Mediterranean passageways for refugees

A coalition of Protestant and Catholic organisations has reached an agreement with the Italian government to provide travel and integration services for refugees from North Africa and the Middle East. The government will provide humanitarian visas to ensure the right to take up residence; the visas will not allow passage to other countries in the European Union. Holy Week Observances in Shepparton

Holy Week is the commemoration of the last week of Jesus Christ’s ministry on Earth. Holy Week is the last week of Lent. It begins with Palm Sunday and leads up to Easter Sunday. Many churches have special services commencing from Palm Sunday. On Thursday evening of Holy Week, there is a celebration of the Lord’s Supper, and the action of the passion of Jesus Christ is observed on Good Friday – with Stations of the Cross and a reading of the Passion of Christ from one of the gospels. Easter Day – the day of resurrection of Jesus, is obsevered sometimes at Midnight, often with a dawn service commemorating the Resurrection, and services on Easter Day itself.
